Even though the GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado share the same platform, the GMC side is most often positioned as the more upscale option. The Sierra nameplate has been associated with GMC’s pickups since the late 1980s and for most of its storied history it has remained essentially the same. The styling has changed occasionally to keep up with the times, but the Sierra still has strong roots that hark back to the old days.
It started as a no-frills workhorse on ranches, farms and construction sites; today it has become equally popular as the family car able to handle long weekends, picnics and pleasure craft tow. Versions of the Sierra seat up to six passengers.
An electronic trailer sway control, hill-start assist, power door locks, and cruise control became standard in 2012. For 2013, the Sierra got a new powertrain grade-braking feature to prevent the brakes from overheating when traveling downhill. Exterior colors Sonoma Red and Heritage Blue were introduced.
The used GMC Sierra offers a surprisingly pleasant driving experience with light but precise steering and a quiet cabin. The added muscle starts showing with the 5.3-liter engine and it can get the Sierra through any work and load with ease.
The front seats for the used GMC Sierra are quite comfortable, the SLE came with bucket seats as an option, the rear seats of the crew cab models are very spacious - entry and exit to the rear is great thanks to the rear doors that swing a full 170 degrees. The seats can be folded down completely flat too, allowing for easy-load cargo.
The Sierra's standard electronic stability system includes rollover mitigation technology. GM says its seat belt pretensions activate during rear impacts. Safety features include:
- Four-wheel antilock brakes
- Traction control
- Side curtain airbags
- Front-seat side-impact airbags
- Available OnStar alerts authorities after a crash
- Available rear parking sensors
- Available backup camera
The used GMC Sierra has hill-start control, trailer sway control, stability control, and anti-lock disc brakes as standard. Side curtain and front side airbags are optional, along with a rearview camera. The standard electronic stability system of the Sierra also gets rollover mitigation technology. Available safety features include a backup camera and an OnStar system to automatically alert authorities in case of an accident.
The Safety ratings for the Sierra come in extremely high. In government crash tests, the used GMC Sierra received an overall score of four stars (out of five). It earned four stars for overall frontal crash protection and five stars for overall side crash protection.
